Gear up for back-to-school shopping during tax-free weekend

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WTVG) – The first day of school is just around the corner and that means it’s time to shop for school supplies.

A good time to start shopping is during Ohio’s tax-free weekend starting Friday, August 5th.

Almost everything costs more today than it did a year ago, which is why this year’s tax-free weekend is going to be extremely helpful for families doing their back-to-school shopping.

“Back to school is starting to pick up now,” said Russ Sporysz, the store manager of the Perrysburg Walmart. “Customers are trying to get a head start especially when they get that school supply list, and also looking to see if those items are going to be available for tax-free weekend so they can save a little bit more money.”

From Friday, August 5th through Sunday, August 7th school supplies and instructional materials costing less than $20 per item will be

Parents will spend an average of $661 per child this year.

Kristina Price will send her two daughters back to school in the coming days and she has already started to think of ways to cut costs.

One hundred students and volunteer chaperones took part to make sure kids don’t go without when they return to the classroom. “I think it’s really great that they did that for us,” said 10-year-old Zoey Jimenez, who added that the shopping spree will help her start fifth grade with confidence. “I got a lot of shirts and dresses, shorts and jeans.”Students from the Elk Grove Unified School District were each given $175 by the Optimist Club to buy anything they needed for school. Many chose the basics over high fashion. “A lot of these kids probably wouldn’t have new clothes they would have hand-me-downs or whatever and so now they are going to school with new clothes, and they can feel proud,” said John Shook, president of the Optimist Club. Young shoppers also got … Read more

New grants, technology enhancements and partnerships are helping grocers and shoppers who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to get more access to more places for online grocery shopping.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) opened applications earlier this month for grants to an organization that will provide technology and systems support for new retailers to offer SNAP online shopping.
